The John
About This Spot
Stepping into The John is like slipping into a well-worn pair of shoes—comforting, familiar, and a bit rough around the edges. Nestled on Burgundy Street, this is a spot where the city's unmistakable energy hums low beneath a dimly lit dive bar vibe. The atmosphere moves at its own deliberate pace, inviting those who know to settle in for a night of easy conversation, familiar faces, and a soundtrack that feels carefully curated by a neighbor who just gets it.
The bar embodies a kind of laid-back resilience. Its walls wear layers of local character, from the vintage album covers to the darting glow of a Pac-Man arcade game in the back corner. The space feels deliberately intimate but unpretentious—a refuge where the no-frills approach is part of its charm. The crowd tends to skew toward a more seasoned local regular, giving the room an easygoing sophistication without fuss.
While The John doesn’t offer a full food menu, the drink selection spells out its own story. Classic cocktails like margaritas and whiskey-based concoctions play a starring role, poured with a straightforward expertise that encourages patrons to lean into the mood rather than chase novelty. Whether it's a neat pour of whiskey or a well-made rum punch, each glass seems to carry a quiet ceremony—a moment to slow down and savor the company and surroundings.
The John’s cash-only policy and no-entrance policy for those under 25 shape a particular kind of evening crowd—one that values connection over convenience and knows that part of the charm lies in its slightly rough-around-the-edges appeal. Beneath the low lighting, patrons discover more than just drinks: there’s humor etched into the artwork, a welcoming nod from the bartender, and the subtle rhythms of a city alive with stories waiting to be shared.
In essence, The John feels less like a stop on the nightlife map and more like a shared secret among those who appreciate an unpolished, genuine slice of New Orleans. It’s a dive bar that embraces its darker corners with a spirit that’s at once loyal and inviting, a place where every visit hints at something quietly familiar and uniquely its own.

Local classic. Worth a stop by if in the neighborhood. Awesome staff. Great music. Vax card required. Cash only. *Now 30+ (guess the kids have been acting up). No entrance to anyone under 30. I love this.

One of my favorite dive bars in New Orleans. The pours are great and the bartenders are laid back. Security guard at the door is a bit of a stiff but he's only doing his job really, specially since the age to enter is 25. Once you're inside the bar itself it's dark with a "divey" feel but if you take the time to check it out; you realize that there's some cool art on the walls and there's humor in its name with a few toilet themed seats against the wall. There is a jukebox that is always rolling and the back room features a pingpong table.

The John is a large bar that is extremely dark and gloomy. The bartender was very professional and engaged and did a great job with the beverages. It is not a very clean bar and seems like clearing the tables are not a priority. Unfortunately. I do like that it is a 25 and older bar though. It helps with the crowds.

Great spot with nice atmosphere and plenty of space. One of the drinks they specialize in is the very tasty and powerful "Hennessy Margarita".
